来自费城的达利尔在坦普尔大学结识了后来的伙伴约翰-奥兹（John Oates）。他们几经分合，最后在汤米-莫托拉（Tommy Mottola，后来也是玛莉亚凯莉的经理人）的运作下，签约亚特兰大唱片公司。
